Where have I been lately? You know what Ferris would say, “The world moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while you could miss it.” Or something like that. It’s not that I haven’t been writing, other names, other places, other stories…what with the spring we had – or should I say didn’t have – and the summer we’ve been having (yes, that blue and green area on the top left of every weather report is Whistler…aka the only place in North America that hasn’t topped the thermometer over 20 degrees more than the digits I can see on any given day I dare to wear sandals …no health Canada hasn’t sent health advisories to Whistler due to inclement heat.) I have been writing but getting published is another story these days. Which brings me to letters, more notably, “the letters that didn’t get printed”.
Have you ever wondered who picks, “the letters to the editor”, letters? The editor obviously…but have you ever wondered who those people
are screwing (oops) er, who they know, or why we keep seeing the same letters from the same people – if you live in Whistler, you know what I’m talking about. In our little chasm of society you would think there were only about 6 people who ever write to the local papers AND more often than not they both (we have 2 papers in town) publish the same letters. WTF?
WTF? Exactly. WTF? In four years of writing to a certain local paper I have seen one, count it, one letter to Dear Ed. make the press (remember the tight ski pants letter? Click!) Well Ed., there’s more than one way to skin a cat…”The letters”, that did, that didn’t, that were never sent, or read or for whatever reason never saw more than two sets of eyes (count my reluctant reader most often on the other end of the couch…aka my wife) now have a home, “The Letters” is now a page on WordPress.
Here is the first installment, a letter to Peter Mansbridge after watching a dumbfounded panel on The National on the eve of the latest federal election…”Dear Peter …”
ps. Got a letter that wasn’t published…try me. I might not put it to press but as sure as you will pay for parking one way or another I’ll let you know why not. Comment below and I’ll get on it.
